World Women’s Curling Championships: Weekend Recap

Mar 20, 2022 | 10:02 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – The World Women’s Curling Championships returned back to Prince George and, after two years of waiting, the first rock was thrown Saturday, March 19 as the opening draw got the entire tournament underway.

Kerri Einarson had mastery of draw weight from the get-go and the skip kept filling the four-foot rings. Canada stole seven points, including two in the first end and three in the second.

Stefania Constantini conceded after counting one in the sixth, handing Canada a 9-2 win in their opening match of the tournament.

Canada was to meet Norway’s Marianne Roervik in Saturday evening’s draw.

Einarson and vice-skip Val Sweeting weren’t as sharp with their draws and hitting against Norway as they were against the Italians earlier in the day. The Norwegians stole three points over the first two ends and stole another in the sixth.

On Day 2 of the tournament, Canada took the morning off with their first match of the day not happening until the afternoon.

Taking on Turkey, it was the first time Kerrin Einarson and her team ever saw the Turkish side. Afterall, it was the first-ever time Turkey would make a world women’s championship appearance.

Bouncing back from Saturday night’s loss to Norway, Einarson shot a perfect game over seven ends, securing Canada an 8-4 victory and their second of the tournament.

In the evening draw, Canada took on the defending champions in Team Switzerland. After falling behind early, giving up three in the opening end, Canada never was able to get their game established against the Swiss.

Einarson and her team suffered a big setback in the sixth, eventually leading to an 11-3 loss.

Elsewhere in the tournament, three games remain undefeated following the first two days of competition. Korea, Japan, and Switzerland all sit at the top of the table with 3-0 records.

On Sunday, after losing their first two matches of the tournament while playing with just a three-player crew, Team Scotland withdrew from the tournament.

After beginning the tournament already down two players, skip Rebecca Morrison and alternate Fay Henderson, due to positive COVID-19 tests, Team Scotland was forced to withdraw from the tournament following two more positive cases among the team.

With Scotland now out, the tournament stands at 12 teams competing.
