PRINCE GEORGE — For three consecutive women’s world championships, Switzerland has reigned as champions after defeating South Korea 7-6 at the 2022 World Women’s Curling Championship in Prince George.

Switzerland has now won seven of the last ten championships.

Meanwhile, South Korea fought their way to the final as a country that made their first appearance in the tournament just 11 years ago, and had only medaled once (a bronze in 2019) before winning silver on Sunday.

After a scoreless opening end, the Swiss pieced together a three-point end in the second, taking the early lead then proceeding to fill the house in the third.

With six stones placed around the house, skip Kim EunJung drew to the outside edge of the red, taking a single and keeping the Swiss at bay as the two teams went into the fourth end.

Swiss skip Alina Paetz scored a single in the fourth end to reestablish their three-point lead from the second. But South Korea responded in the fifth with another well-weighted draw from EunJung, scoring two to narrow the Swiss lead to just a single, 4-3.

With Switzerland holding the hammer in the sixth, Korea’s Kim KyeongAe got the result she was looking for with her team’s sixth rock of the end, hitting the red out, rolling over and then freezes to force Paetz to settle for a single in the end.

Continuing to play catchup, South Korea responded in the seventh end, keeping pace and coming up with a double to draw even with Switzerland, tying the score up 5-5 heading into the eighth end.

Managing to score every end they held hammer, Paetz continued the trend in the eighth end, pulling off a perfect draw to the button and stepping ahead once again, 6-5.

A single in the ninth end by Korea knotted the score up, opening the way for Paetz and Team Switzerland to do what they did all match long and make use of their hammer.

And that they did, clearing a pair of Korean rocks to take a single and seal their third consecutive world title in Prince George.
