PRINCE GEORGE – UNBC’s very own Kiana Swift has travelled across the world to play soccer in a country that hits close to home. The Timberwolves athlete planned to play with the Tongan team in 2019, but COVID hit, and plans changed. This year brought the opportunity back, which led her to fly out on July 10 to play with the international team in Fiji.

“It’s been amazing, and I can’t even put into words how awesome it’s been. To also represent my mom’s country and everything like that has been an honour. I also think learning the Fijian culture and getting to explore the town, and everything has been really eye-opening as well,” said Swift.

The culture that Fiji brings is something Swift hopes to bring home when she returns in the fall.

“Honestly, [as a team], we say grace before and after each game. And even aside from religion, I think just taking the time to be grateful for every day and be grateful for being able to play the game and practice, especially in Paradise, and being mindful of the opportunities [is important],” said Swift.

Swift is expected to be back on the pitch for UNBC come the fall to complete her fourth year with the TWolves soccer program and will continue her journey in the nursing program.
