Local girl raising money for animal rescue

PRINCE GEORGE – Since July, 10-year-old Jennifer Slater has been creating homemade dog toys to sell to the community.

“I make these dog toys to sell to dogs and the money goes to love for paws.”

Slater is a member of the Kelly Road Guides and had come home after a meeting and told her mom they had made handmade dog toys and they had then donated them to Luvs Animal Rescue.

“I’m a little astounded. I didn’t know that they were making dog toys or doing anything with doctors and that I’d seen a post on Facebook saying that they had donated them,” explained Christine Slater, Jennifer’s mother. “All of the guys had donated them to Love for Paws, and that was my first introduction to Love for Paws.”

Without hesitation, Jennifer continued creating the toys and sold them for $5 a piece, with all proceeds going straight to Luvs.

Andrea Sowers, who is the founder of Luvs Animal Rescue said she received a message from Jen’s mom and was touched by the gesture.

“I couldn’t believe that this young girl had this much kindness to give. It’s just it’s so impressive and it speaks volumes to me [about] the way she was raised,” explains Sowers “This money that you’ve donated is going to save this many lives. Every $15 vaccinates an animal and saves them from a life of disease.”

The family is looking for more tennis balls as there seems to be a shortage around town. They are asking the community to consider donating any balls if they are found. If you are interested in donating materials you can click here, and speak with Christine. If you would like to donate to Luvs Northern Rescue, you can head to their Facebook page for more information.

Jennifer and Christine will be sharing a booth with Luvs at the Prince George Family bike festival that is happening this Saturday at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.
