PRINCE GEORGE – Finding childcare is one of many challenges facing parents making the opening of a new childcare centre in Malaspina a very welcome addition to lower College Heights.

“Yeah, things are coming up and we’re progressing now, we’re hoping to get in soon and be able to offer care to the families that are on our waitlist here,” said Jean Petrovic, Kool Cats’ Kid Care Administrator.

Petrovic said she is pleased to see the lease get signed and things get moving on the new facility adding she expects the doors to open in just over a month.

This new daycare project will offer 24 spaces for infants and toddlers, 25 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age, 24 spaces for school-aged children, and 10 preschool spaces.

The opening of this facility has been delayed by paperwork as School District 57 waited five months to clarify they were not interested in signing the lease citing the project was “not feasible.”

Signing a 15-year lease with Kool Cats Kid Care took the staff with the City of Prince George roughly one day after getting word SD57 was not interested.

Hundreds of parents remain on waitlists for childcare including Paige Silva Carlson who was overjoyed the project was going forward, crossing her fingers to hope she was going to be chosen to get a spot.

The young mother of a 17-month-old and a seven-year-old said she is due to go back to work next week but has been unable to find childcare for either of her children after applying to hundreds of spaces.
