PRINCE GEORGE — Families across the country came together today to mourn workers who lost their lives at the workplace.

In Prince George the ceremony was held at the Workers Memorial and over 50 people showed up to remember their loved ones.

“We have to continue fight for safety of work. People are still getting injured and dying on the workforce,” said Matt Baker, the president of North Central Labour Council.

Baker also emphasized that refusing to perform unsafe work is a constitutional right that workers and employers should be aware of.

“Companies should all be held accountable to make sure their employees are educated. If it is unsafe, they [workers] are allowed to stop working until there is a solution to the problem. They have the right to do that without retaliation from their employer,” he explained.

Last year, Canada had 181 work related deaths. According to WorkSafe B.C., occupational disease is the leading cause of deaths for workers in the province.
