PRINCE GEORGE – The next wave of recruits are hard at work in Prince George training for the BC Wildfire Service.

BC’s Northern Capital is serving as the site of the BCWS new recruit boot camp for the second time in as many years. Previously all new recruits were trained in Merritt.

“It’s a key component of developing a good BC wildfire firefighter,” said Sharon Nickel, Fire Information Officer for the BCWS. “Essentially what boot camp looks like is there’s a lot of classroom components as well as obviously fitness testing and then putting some of that theory that the recruits have learned into practice.”

This year, the Prince George Fire Centre is hosting two concurrent boot camps in Prince George with approximately 150 recruits receiving world-class training in wildfire fighting practices and techniques.

Tasks such as operating a water pump, digging hand guard, and conducting safe and properly controlled burns were all part of the activities showcased on Friday.

Fitness is also made as a high priority for new recruits joining the service.

Those interested in becoming part of the BC Wildfire Service can look for information sessions next winter and begin the process to get to a boot camp next spring.
