PRINCE GEORGE – Hundreds of students gathered at Duchess Park Secondary School on Thursday to take in the inaugural School District 57 Student Leadership Summit put on by the District Student Advisory Committee (DSAC).

The event included seminars for leadership students from high schools across Prince George on mental health and wellness, truth and reconciliation, and more.

“We asked ourselves, how can we tie in what we’ve been doing to something new,” said Airi Sudo-Rustad, a grade 12 student and member of the SD57 District Student Advisory Committee. “To be honest with you, a lot of these things that we’re talking about, I never really learned and I’m at the end of my role in school, whereas it’s like if we teach these kids younger now and they’re leaders in the school, they can go out and make changes and so many different ways.”

One of the keynote speakers for the day was Dr. Hayley Watson a clinical psychologist and founder of the open parachute mental health program. SD57 recently started to incorporate the open parachute program into student learning joining over 250,000 other students who take it in across the globe.

The second keynote was Dr. Brad Marsden, a member of the Gitxsan Nation, who shared stories and provided a student workshop on truth and reconciliation.

The day wraps up with breakout sessions for students to share ideas to bring back to their own high schools.

Over five years after being created, the feedback is clear, the SD57 District Student Advisory Committee is working with great success.
