PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George City Council has approved a new fire-service road to be constructed at the encampment on Lower Patricia Blvd. In a statement from City Hall, an official clarified:

The City is advised by Fire Services that a roadway of 18 feet is required in order to allow equipment and crews to operate safely. The extent of the work planned to facilitate this access is the placement of no-post concrete barriers at a width of 18 feet along the length of the existing roadway though the area. The City does not intend to pave the roadway or install any permanent infrastructure. – City of Prince George

The encampment on Lower Patricia has been the site of a number of fires in recent weeks, and site safety is top of mind in preparation for a population influx at the encampment.

The construction comes in tandem with the shutdown and consolidation of the cities’ satellite encampments into a central zone on lower Patricia Blvd known locally as moccasin flats, which is protected under a BC Supreme Court Order. According to notices posted at the site, construction is slated to begin as early as this coming Monday.
