PRINCE GEORGE – Out with Cariboo Rocks the North and in with the BC Northern Exhibition.

“This is our 111th B.C.E.,” says Sylvia Layzell, General Manager, BCNE ” Well, we’re fast in the setup right now. Thursday morning at 10 a.m., the gates open and we’ll have the West Coast to meet. West Coast Amusements Midway Rides Pro Rodeo is here Sunday.”

In fact, the BCNE is older than the City of Prince George by three years, and besides the midway, a big part of the event is the 4-H displays.

“All right. So here we are getting this is the steer and burn. So this is the yeah, this is beef. And then we have swine in here as well,” says Liz Ramsay, Chair of the Pineview 4-H Club, “And then in the other barns, we have rabbit and poultry. You also have our little clover about guys and honeybees. And then in the third barn over, you’re going to have actually alpaca this year, which is super cool and sheep and goat.”

There are over a hundred kids of different ages involved in the local 4-H clubs and it’s an education in life. The kids raise their animals from cradle to grave. The cycle of life.

“Another thing is, is that they’re able to market themselves. And that’s a huge thing, especially when you go for a job. You need to be able to show what you are able to bring to the table. What you represent as well is there’s just this really cool trust in each other and they only see the positives in the situation.”

And this year, as the tents are going up and everyone is gearing up from 10 a.m. Thursday, there’s a newbie to the lineup.

“And new this year is Ale festival,” says Layzell. “So yeah only $35 gets you in the gate and to the festival where you can check out 15 craft breweries from around B.C. So we’re really excited to bring that for the first year here. And how many people do you normally see come through the gates?”

Typically over the four-day event, organizers expect to see twenty thousand people through the gates.
