PRINCE GEORGE – Knowing what foods are allowed or off limits based on your school’s rules is important when packing lunches. There a couple of basic food items to stay away from, but it’s hard to figure out a replacement.

“Many schools are peanut and nut aware and will ask parents to avoid peanuts or nuts when packing lunches. So, it’s really important that you’re aware of the specific policy that your school has. Sometimes it can be hard to think of alternatives, especially because peanut butter sandwiches can be such an affordable staple for many families.”

– Emilia Moulechkova, Dietitian, Northern Health

Figuring out what your school allows will help prevent any major issues from occurring, and to start the learning process, it’s best to know the difference between the two main food items that are typically prohibited.

“This is not common knowledge, [that peanuts and nuts] actually come from different families. Peanuts are legumes and nuts are tree nuts. So, if someone is allergic to peanuts, it doesn’t mean that they necessarily have an allergy to tree nuts and vice versa.”
