Inspiring Women Among us Returns November 2023

Nov 15, 2023 | 11:00 AM

In 2023, a United Nations Report documented that, around the world, 9 out of 10 people still hold biases against women. The undervaluing of women’s work and capabilities continues to hold back society’s progress towards gender equity. Inspiring Women Among Us (IWAU) works to change that perception by showcasing amazing knowledge, talent, experiences and wisdom that women, Indigenous people, People of Colour, members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and other under-represented folks contribute to society.

IWAU started in 2015, and this year’s theme is Transforming IDEAS into Action: Partnering for inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and social justice. We are welcoming speakers, special guests, and participants to engage with actions they can take to support equity, diversity, and inclusion in their workplaces, neighbourhoods, homes, and lives.

This year IWAU events run from November 22 – 29th and offer a wide range of in-person, online, and hybrid events to bring together people so that we can learn from and enjoy a diversity of experiences. Activities range from speakers, to crafting opportunities and an art exhibition, to movement like BIPOC yoga, a self-defense workshop, and a Forest Bathing Winter Walk. IWAU is always an ALL-GENDER and multi-generational series of events. There are many activities that are youth appropriate as well.

Through talks, panels, workshops, training opportunities, and conversations, IWAU participants will learn about protecting caribou; engage in practicing Equity, Diversity, Accessibility and Inclusiveness; consider how gender and space interact; enjoy and celebrate queer creativity and scholarship; become more aware about ableism; learn about how to support diverse activism and advocacy; and focus on communicating in plain language.

We always try to include a mix of serious, formal, fun, communal, creative, and different activities—something for everyone—so that we can all find a way to join in conversations about gender and gender relations.  We know from past events and participant feedback that these are valued and rare opportunities, and we work hard to keep them free and open for all.

IWAU ends with an observance of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, on November 29th starting at 11am, in the Gathering Place at the College of New Caledonia.

As always, all events are free, welcoming to all genders and all community members. The full schedule  can be found here: https://www.iwau.ca. IWAU is also on Facebook, Twitter (X), and Instagram.  You can also email Drs. Annie Booth (annie.booth@unbc.ca) or Zoe Meletis (zoe.meletis@unbc.ca) for more information.
