PRINCE GEORGE—Enviroment Canada is predicting the weather to dip down this weekend and if you’re outside for long periods of time you could be at risk for cold related injuries.

Frostbite is a freezing of the tissues which can cause damage overtime.

There’s first, second, third and fourth degree frostbite and that correlates with severity. And so basically you’re talking about freezing of the skin of more and more layers of the skin and tissues beneath the skin

Raina Fumerton, Medical Health Officer, Northern Health

As this damage worsens it can lead to major injuries including amputations. This means it is important to learn the warning signs of frostbite. Also known as Frostnip it’s when your skin begins to discolour and develop a numbing sensation but there is no damage to the skin.

Fumerton provides some safety tips if you need to be outside for long periods of time.

Ideally the clothing is made out of wool or synthetic fabric. So, not cotton. Cotton is a terrible insulator. Whereas if you have things like merino wool or things of that nature, those are really good insulators.

Fumerton continues by noting that mittens are better than finger gloves because they allow you to ball your hands up into fist to preserve warmth.

If you begin to feel the effects of frostbite head inside and warm up.
