Christmas Wish Breakfast returns bigger than ever

PRINCE GEORGE – The annual Christmas Wish Breakfast returned for its fifth year, and it was once again a massive success.

The premise is simple: bring a toy, receive a free breakfast! While simple, it’s raised thousands of toys for United Way and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and while the official numbers aren’t in yet event organizers believe they easily surpassed last year’s total of 1000 toys raised.

Organized by the Prince George Industrial Mutual Aid Committee and first responders, event coordinator Valerie Marsh says the support was fantastic this year.

“The Prince George paramedics, they came in with a gurney full of toys. The firemen, they came in with a truckload full of toys. And we’ve had amazing support from the local hockey teams and everybody has just opened their hearts so much for this event this year, it’s just overwhelming,” Marsh said.

It’s not just the organizations though, many community members dropped by and helped contribute towards giving as many children as possible presents under the tree. Given how inflation and rising costs have impacted all of us, Marsh was extra grateful for everyone who still found a way to donate.

“I truly believe that for sure that people are thinking about those a little bit less fortunate, even though they’re struggling with rising costs of everything, inflation is crazy right now, they’re still finding enough room in their pocketbooks and in their hearts to give back,” she said.

As for all the first responders involved, Trent Blair with Prince George Fire Rescue said getting involved in charitable projects like this a no-brainer. Saying first responders are already all about public service, this is just another way to continue giving back to the community.

“It gives us a chance to answer questions, engage with the kids that come into the community. To see a whole family come in with their three or four kids and mom and dad, all the kids have a present to put it underneath the tree and then we get to engage with those people in that family,” he said.

Blair added it’s nice to be able to spend time with the community in a positive and fun setting like this charity breakfast, as first responders are often involved in crisis situations and dark moments in peoples’ lives.

“An event like this allows us to come in and bond with our emergency services and our other fellow first responders in a friendly and open, engaging community way,” he continued.

At the end of the day, it’s all about trying to brighten up a child’s Christmas morning with presents under the tree, and that alone makes the effort well worth it.

“All these toys behind us, we hope that they just bring joy to some little boy or girl on Christmas morning that maybe didn’t have that chance.”
