B.C. Transportation Contractors of the Year awards are here

NORTHERN B.C.— Step aside Baldur’s Gate Three, the Contractors of the Year winners are in. B.C. Transportation have announced the winners for their achievements in paving, grading and maintenance.

Paving Awards:

The nominees for this award included the Asphalt Road Resurfacing on Highway 17 and Mckenzie Avenue, and the Asphalt Resurfacing on Highway 97 near Hixon. With the Award going to Dawson Construction Ltd. for the Asphalt Resurfacing on Highway 97. Through rain shine and fires, the team repaved 54.3 KM using 15% recycled-asphalt pavement to create a smoother and sustainable road.

Community Service Award:

There were many great nominees for the 2023 Award of Excellence for Community Service including, Emil Anderson Group, West Horizon Contracting, and Mainroad Mid-Island (SA2). However there can only be one winner and it goes to Yellowhead Road & Bridge Ltd. in Vanderhoof. For the past five years the company has partnered with the non-profit Murray Ridge Ski Area providing crucial road maintenance, snow removal and parking-lot care to ensure safe travel for students on ski days. The company also partnered with the Stellat’en First Nation on the Stella Road pedestrian walkway project, donating materials, equipment and more than 550 person hours.

Bridges and Structures award:

Gitga’at Park Derochie Industrial Services Inc. has been recognized for their rehabilitation of the Old Skeena Bridge near Terrace. The almost 100 year old bridge is a symbol of the region’s rich heritage and scenic beauty. The project was finished four months ahead of schedule.

Grading award:

Thompson Brothers Construction rose to the challenges when they completed the Highway 29 Lynx Creek bridge replacement and highway-realignment project. The company moved more than two million cubic metres of material to improve an embankment and bridge at risk of flooding.

Workplace Health and Safety award:

AIM Roads received the award for their use of the Safety Intelligent Protection Technology (SIPT) system that enhances workers safety by creating a virtual fence and AI-driven hazard alarms, in addition to traffic-control devices.

Road and Bridge Maintenance award:

The nominees for this award included YRB Fort George, and YRB Service Area 10, but Capilano Highway Services took home this award for redefining the industry standard across the board with innovations like safety and quality software programs, smartphone apps and improvements to winter maintenance.

None of the Contractors teased any new roads but when travelling to see family for Christmas remember to thank the unsung heroes that help you get to your destination, the road workers.
