CUPE 3742 says they are having trouble retaining school support workers

PRINCE GEORGE — CUPE 3742, which supports school/education support workers in SD57, says they are having issues retaining workers, and are losing staff for many reasons.

Paula Bass, president of CUPE 3742 says that from June to October 2023, they lost over 65 members to resignations, and says that one of the main issues behind the retention problem, involve violence that workers face on a daily basis.

The hours that school support staff are given is also an issue, and said that many workers are working 25 hours or less per week and are not paid over Christmas break, the summer break or spring break.

Paula says that many entering the field are not expecting the level of violence that is witnessed by a school support worker on a daily basis and some have to wear Kevlar sleeves and shields.

School support workers perform a number of different roles in a school, including clerical tasks, custodians that keep the schools clean, Indigenous education workers, youth care workers and a host of others.

Paula says that one way of adding additional hours for support workers is through before and after school care and there have been examples of this in other communities like Campbell River, Delta and Nakusp where they’ve been able to provide keeping staff with full time hours and thereby retaining them at a better level than here in Prince George. Bass says that the same can be done here, it just comes down to implementation.

“We need our administrators and our board to reach out to other school districts to ask the questions and get the ball rolling.” – Paula Bass, President, CUPE 3742
