Food for Fare returns to pre-Covid donation numbers
PRINCE GEORGE – The annual Food for Fare returned from December 4-6, and the donation numbers are back to pre-Covid numbers thanks to rising numbers of bus riderships. While an exact count isn’t known, BC Transit estimates it raised 150-200 items of food. However, the weight of the food is known, and the total weight was around 235 pounds.
“We’re really impressed with the community and we want to extend our thanks to our transit riders in the community for private donations,” said the City of Prince George’s Transit Planner Michael Coulson.
“It’s a good start. We still got a long way to go to provide all the necessary food to all the people in need. And particularly this year, a lot of people need a lot of help. Please give generously and make sure we don’t waste food and we as a community, let’s stick together, be generous to each other, and let’s just show people our true color,” Mayor Simon Yu added.
The campaign works by allowing bus riders a free ride if they bring a food donation instead of the bus fare. While raising 235 pounds of food purely from bus riders is impressive, Mayor Yu was correct in saying it’s a good start, as that amount of food may not go as far as you think.
