PRINCE GEORGE — Catchment and capacity continues to be an issue in School District 57, as the topic was discussed at Tuesday night’s board meeting.

Trustee Sarah Holland gave a report from the Catchment and Capacity Rightsholders and Stakeholders Advisory Committee and the committee determined that there were two main areas of concern for the 2024/2025 school year: Duchess Park Secondary and Peden Hill Elementary.

Duchess Park has capacity for 900 students and has a current enrolment of 510, leading the committee to recommend that the catchment for Duchess Park be removed with restrictions in order to allow for greater student registration to a maximum enrolment of 920, effective September 1, 2024.

Peden Hill Elementary is a different story. They have an operating capacity of 205 and have a current enrolment of 264. Therefore, the committee recommended that enrolment at Peden Hill be restricted to students in the catchment area, effective September 1, 2024.

Enrolment at the following schools will be restricted to catchment area students only, effective September 1, 2024

  • Beaverly Elementary
  • College Heights Secondary
  • College Heights Elementary
  • Edgewood Elementary
  • Glenview Elementary
  • Hart Highlands Elementary
  • Harwin Elementary
  • Heritage Elementary
  • Malaspina Elementary
  • Peden Hill Elementary
  • Ron Brent Elementary
  • Southridge Elementary
  • Springwood Elementary
  • Vanway Elementary

Kindergarten enrolment at the following schools will be restricted effective Sept. 1, 2024:

  • College Heights Elementary – French Immersion program, no more than 20 students
  • Polaris Montessori Elementary – no more than 40 students
  • Ecole Lac des Bois – no more than 60 students

The board unanimously passed the recommended motions put forward by the committee.
