PRINCE GEORGE – This year marks the 50th anniversary of women’s inclusion in the frontline of the RCMP. One of the longest-serving women on the frontline, serving the North District RCMP, is based in Prince George.

For the past 38 years, Corporal Madonna Saunderson has been donning the RCMP uniform, tirelessly serving communities in northern BC, including Prince George and Fraser Lake. Despite the challenges, she has never once doubted her decision.

“I believe I wanted to join the mounted police before they even took women as police officers. I remember a time in elementary school when a police officer came to our school to talk, and I was just enthralled by the brown boots and the shine on those boots. And I was just mesmerized by this man.”

When Saunderson joined the force in 1986, she underwent training with 30 other women in her unit. Back then, women were fairly new to the police force, but Saunderson persevered.

Today, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are still actively seeking individuals to join the force.
