PRINCE GEORGE — B.C. Minister of Health Adrian Dix and his federal counterpart Mark Holland announced the 733 million dollars in funding on Monday, and they say that the funding will help expand home and community care, improve access to palliative and end-of-life services and improve the quality of long-term care.

What this agreement is going to be able to do in the next coming years to expand home and community services, how critical that is to to open pathways is for people to be able to age at home and have care at home as long as possible, making sure that when they do transition to a to a home care facility, to a place that is going to feel like home and is going to take very good care of them.” – Mark Holland, Federal Minister of Health

Adrian Dix says that the agreement reflects the changing demographics that BC is facing.

“We’re building a new hospital and care facility in Fort St. James, and the number of people over 75 in that community will increase by 186%. This agreement today reflects that changing society.” – Adrian Dix, B.C. Minister of Health

Both health ministers said that the funding be beneficial to expanding the workforce for long-term care.

“The other half is is truly incremental for long term care and will allow us to make specific increases and improvements both to the workforce and long term care, because that’s critical. We’ve been doing that and you’ve seen the number of people working in long term care increasing dramatically as we increase care standards, increasing dramatically as we make improvements for them.” – Adrian Dix, B.C. Minister of Health
