Prince George airport disputes unfavourable ranking

PRINCE GEORGE – A recent report by Casinoshunter stating Prince George has the fourth worst airport in the country has been met with criticism and scrutiny by several community members and organizations in Prince George.

“We were surprised and disappointed at the traction this story got in local and then national media. We became aware of an online casino ranking website that randomly selected 25 of Canada’s 128 commercial airports, assigned six random factors, and then came out with a data set that ranked those airports, regardless of size or location,” said Prince George Airport Authority President and CEO Gordon Duke.

Casinoshunter isan organization that gathers data about casinos and hospitality businesses and creates rankings. Its airport rankings were based on six details: lounges, dining facilities, rental car companies on site, operating airlines, and hotels within a three kilometre radius. Duke believes this ranking doesn’t properly represent the community’s thoughts on our airport, saying he has heard a lot of positive feedback from community members, especially since the initial report came out.

“When something like this happens we do a pretty extensive scan of media and social media, and we’re heartened to see the opinions expressed by people that actually use the airport and come to our defense and with some really positive comments,” Duke said.

Among other things, Duke says our airport excels in friendly, quick service from its staff, alongside representing our community through its wood architecture and highlighting and continuing to work with First Nations communities.

“We’re a pretty simple airport. We’re quick, efficient, and have, for an airport our size, a really good food and beverage offering,” Duke said.

Tourism Prince George CEO Colin Carson added that for Prince George’s size, it’s quite a convenient airport to travel around the world. While our airport of course doesn’t have the same flights available that a major hub like Vancouver or Calgary would, Carson says people from Prince George historically don’t have a huge task ahead of them should they wish to travel around the world.

“There’s a lot of direct flights from Prince George to Vancouver daily and then easy connections from there. You also can get to other destinations direct from Prince George. so I think it’s a great airport for what we have, for the amount of customers that they service,” Carson said.

One aspect of Casinoshunter ranking was the fact that there isn’t a hotel within 3 kilometres, but according to Duke this could potentially be changing.

“We are working with developing a hotel here (the airport), and we’ll have more to announce on that once that progress is underway,” Duke said.

Beyond the convenience of having a hotel near our airport, Carson added it could also be a great tourism booster too. a nearby hotel could entice people to stay an extra day or night in Prince George, knowing that they’ll have a room nearby the airport to catch their flight.

“I think that’s going to open some opportunities that currently don’t exist. If you’re coming from Smithers, for example, say, an early morning flight, having a hotel near the airport is just going to be a benefit for those types of travelers, for sure,” Carson said.

While a smaller city like ours won’t have the amount of restaurants, facilities, and options that a major hub like Toronto or Vancouver might, Duke, Carson, and many community members agrees that our airport is doing quite well and doesn’t deserve to be considered among the worst in the country.
