Beautiful weather leads to great business for golf courses

PRINCE GEORGE – The weather this golf season has been about as good as it can get for the local golf courses, leading to better conditions and more business.

“We opened the golf course April 12 of this year, which is quite a few weeks earlier than previous seasons. And we’ve been blessed with some great weather and some excellent course conditions,” said Prince George Golf and Curling Club General Manager David Wilson.

The early opening certainly helped boost business, but the sustained conditions have been the key component for such a successful golf season. Sunny days, plenty of rain, and significantly less wildfire smoke than years past have led to golf courses being packed.

“We’ve seen an influx in bookings, we’re approximately 3000 bookings over where we were at this time last year,” Wilson said.

“We’ve been busy every day. Even when the rain was going we were still busy. So we’ve had a great season of this year,” said Pine Valley Manager-Supervisor Margaret Goings.

The sunny days have certainly been enjoyed by golfers, but equally as important is the extra rain this season has seen. Notably, July saw around 20 millimetres above the average rainfall, and that’s been a key factor in keeping the courses well maintained.

“We’ve had nothing but compliments on how green the greens are, and the grounds people have been able to keep up with everything and they’ve kept them really beautiful looking,” Goings said.

The additional rain means money has also been saved on the water bill, so Wilson says the money saved can be used elsewhere to focus on other improvements.

“We are defining our fairways, improving our teeing grounds, essentially improvements to the course to make the overall play better for all of our players,” he said.

August’s forecast looks to continue with the sunny days, but also have rain mixed in, meaning it’s possible the good times will continue for the golf courses.
