PRINCE GEORGE—Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps with your bodies healing process, absorbing and storing iron, and is needed to form blood vessels cartilage, muscle and collagen. But, will it help you cure your cold? A local pharmacist says that if you’re not suffering from scurvy the effects are minimal.

Brett Chaisson of Third Ave Pharmacy explains that studies have shown that if you take vitamin C every day for a year you might see the duration of your cold decrease. However, the amount is minimal and requires a large committment.

Chaisson adds that a regular healthy diet of fruits and vegetables have more than enough Vitamin C for those processes.

Taking too much vitamin C can even cause some side effects including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The best thing you can do when you are sick is get plenty of rest.

“Make sure you’re getting adequate rest, lots of fluids. And then, if people have one particular symptom that’s really bothering them, like a wet cough, a dry persistent cough, or sore throat. Then you can treat those things but they won’t actually reduce how long you’re sick for in general,” says Chaisson.
