PRINCE GEORGE — Around 100 people of all age groups attended the Red Dress Society Day event in Prince George Monday afternoon (May 5).

It took place at the Red Dress monument, located at Highway 16 and Ferry Avenue, at 1 p.m.

The event was the 15th annual Red Dress Day across Canada which honours missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Society President Tammy Meise says the event provided a safe space for families who have lost loved ones.

“When you come together in a safe space and you feel supported, it is uplifting to know that it is not just you that has had this horrific situation happen to you. Other people know how you feel and stand beside you.”

The event in Prince George was one of many that took place across Canada Monday.

Red Dress Day was inspired by Metis artist Jamie Black’s installation project, which saw red dresses hung across North America as visual reminders of the number of women who have been killed or are missing.
