PRINCE GEORGE – The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has wrapped up its investigation into a police-involved shooting incident that took place earlier this week near Prince George.

On the evening of May 27, 2025, around 7:30 p.m., a man opened fire on police officers in a rural area near Highway 16 and Upper Fraser Road.

Police located the man on a forest service road north of Highway 16. During the interaction with the police, he sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

After reviewing the medical evidence gathered by IIO investigators, the chief civilian director determined that the man’s injuries did not meet the criteria for serious harm, as outlined in the Police Act.

With this conclusion, the IIO investigation is now complete.

Charges have been approved by the B.C. Prosecution Service in the investigation relating to this incident. The suspect is identified as 39-year-old Tyler Cavan Suel of Prince George.

Mr. Suel has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Discharge firearm with intent (4 counts)
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a weapon
  • Flight from peace officer while pursued

“We are incredibly proud of the professional, coordinated and timely response our police officers had to this threatening and dynamic event. Even in the face of being shot at, all of those who responded to the call maintained their professionalism and saw the event through to a positive conclusion, states Inspector Chris Riddle, Operations Officer for the Prince George RCMP Detachment.
