Two big weekends ahead for Barkerville
BARKERVILLE – The next two weekends will be big ones for the Barkerville Historic Site, as is brings back Indigenous Peoples’ Celebrations.
The event started in 2014, but had to be put on hold first for COVID-19 and then, last year, because of the wildfires. First Nations from the Lheidli T’enneh to as far as Lillooet come for the events, which include many different performances.
“So coming up tomorrow, Saturday, August 16, we have our Indigenous People’s celebration. We’re going to have representatives from Indigenous communities from all throughout the region coming to join us and sharing stories, dancing,” says Stewart Cawood, Manager of Public Programming and Media for Barkerville. “There’s going to be parades and songs, and then there’s going to be some games as well. And the winner is going to be some bear dancers coming from Lillooet. So we’re very excited. This is one of our favourite days of the season.”
