To Your Health – Your Pharmacist Can Help

Prince George – If you run out of medication and can’t see your doctor, a pharmacist in British Columbia might be able to help you quickly.

Provincial rules allow B.C. pharmacists to dispense emergency medication, renew prescriptions, and sometimes adjust them. You do not need to see a doctor or nurse practitioner for these services.

Pharmacist Brianna Pallot says the key is communication. “If you can call your doctor before you call the pharmacy, get an appointment, give us a call, let us know when your appointment is, and we’ll give you the supply to get to that appointment,” she says.

Pallot explains there are two main options. An emergency supply is usually short-term and helps you until your next appointment. An adaptation renewal can last longer, but it is mostly for people who have been on the same medication without any changes. ” Usually, we can do for longer periods of time, you have to have been on the medication for a long period of time without change, without any issues,” she says.

Pharmacists can also change a prescription if a specific type of medication is unavailable. For example, they might switch you from a cream to an ointment if the cream is out of stock. They can also adjust your dose if they think the original amount is not right for you.

“We always run it by the patient, of course, because that’s our obligation as a healthcare professional,” Pallot says. “But there are things we can do to adjust your prescriptions if we deem that what might have been prescribed is not the best for you.”

In B.C., pharmacists can also prescribe medication for minor health issues and for contraception. These services help take pressure off walk-in clinics and emergency rooms. It is a good idea to call your pharmacy early and, if you can, tell the pharmacist when your next doctor’s appointment is.
