Supporting healthcare through a burger: McHappy Day returns to Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – McHappy Day returned to McDonald’s locations all across Prince George and the country on May 6, which is one of McDonald’s biggest fundraising days of the year. Locally, this fundraiser goes straight to supporting the community through a variety of initiatives.

“McHappy Day is a fundraiser to help support the local child development centre, Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, and the Ronald McDonald House, and we also have the family room in Prince George,” said the Vance Road McDonald’s General Manager Michael Branco.

Regarding the family room at UHNBC, Branco says it’s especially nice to see tangible effects of the McHappy Day fundraiser, as last year’s version of the event saw those funds raised go directly towards helping build that room.

“It’s great to be part of it and just get the whole community together to support such a great cause, it’s absolutely fantastic,” Branco said.

McHappy Day sees a lot of community involvement, as first responders like paramedics and firefighters were at McDonald’s helping fundraise, alongside local radio stations 101.3 The River and 99.3 Rewind Radio.

“It’s been lots of fun. It’s always nice to come see everyone, see the community, and know where they’re helping out. It means a lot to us as firefighters,” said PG Fire Rescue Fire Hall 3 Captain Mark Dorval.

Dorval says being a first responder is a way to give back to the community through the job, although that often involves interacting with people on some of the worst days of their lives, so the opportunity to get involved in positive and light-hearted events like this is always appreciated.

“We do see people on bad days, but it’s great to be able to be a part of things when it’s going really well. It just brightens up our day a lot, so we all like it,” Dorval said.

There’s no official numbers yet, but Branco says locally, fundraising has already surpassed last year’s total.
