PRINCE GEORGE — A mother is remembering her son as a gifted student with a bright future after he died in a boating accident on Stony Lake last weekend.

Corrie Townsend is mourning the loss of her son, Tre, who died when the boat he was operating capsized. Three friends who were aboard the vessel survived the incident.

As she navigates her own grief, Townsend says she is also concerned about the young men who were with her son that day. She recently met with them and encouraged them to seek support as they cope with the tragedy.

“I don’t want them to carry survivor’s guilt,” she said.

Townsend describes Tre as an exceptional student who was set to graduate from high school a full year early. In fact, today would have marked that milestone.

She said her son excelled academically, particularly in mathematics. While many of his peers were still learning foundational concepts, Tre was already studying pre-calculus and developing coding skills.

His ambitions extended well beyond the classroom. Tre had planned to attend university this fall, where he intended to major in business.

Townsend said her son often talked about his dreams for the future and the life he hoped to build.

“He wanted to take care of me,” she recalled. “He even talked about buying me a house one day.”

In the days following the accident, Townsend says she has been overwhelmed by the support shown by friends, neighbours and community members.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help the family cover funeral expenses, and donations have continued to pour in.

Townsend said a memorial created outside Tre’s high school has brought her comfort during an unimaginably difficult time.

Seeing the tributes left by students, staff and community members has reinforced just how many lives her son touched, she said.

“It shows me how loved he was by everyone.”

As family and friends continue to grieve, Townsend hopes Tre will be remembered not only for his academic achievements, but also for his kindness, ambition and the promise of a future that was cut tragically short.
