QUESNEL, B.C. — RCMP are investigating a serious collision that left one person with life-threatening injuries and forced the closure of Highway 97 for several hours on Saturday afternoon.

According to Quesnel RCMP, officers were called to the scene at approximately 1:14 p.m. on June 27 following a collision involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 26.

Police said the crash occurred when a pickup truck was attempting to enter Highway 97 from Highway 26 and collided with a northbound tractor-trailer travelling along the highway.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, where the driver and sole occupant of the pickup truck sustained serious injuries. The individual was transported to hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.

The collision prompted a significant emergency response as police, paramedics, and other first responders worked to assist those involved and secure the area. Traffic along Highway 97 was disrupted while investigators examined the scene and gathered evidence to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.

“Highway 97 was closed for approximately three hours while police conducted their investigation,” said Sgt. Clay Kronebusch, Media Relations Officer with the Quesnel RCMP.

The closure affected travel through the area during a busy weekend period, with motorists experiencing delays and being directed to alternate routes where possible. The highway was reopened once investigators completed their on-scene examination and it was deemed safe for traffic to resume.

At this stage, RCMP have not released the identity of the injured driver, and no further details regarding the person’s condition have been made public. Investigators are continuing to examine factors that may have contributed to the crash.

RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to contact police, as investigators continue to gather information.

No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information related to the collision is encouraged to contact the Quesnel RCMP.
