Prince George to get new in-person family law centre for survivors of family violence

PRINCE GEORGE — People experiencing family violence in Prince George will soon have access to free, in-person family law services as the Province expands its Family Law Centre program to northern B.C.

The new Prince George office, expected to open in late summer 2026, will provide legal representation and advocacy support for survivors who cannot afford a lawyer. Until now, many residents in Prince George and surrounding communities have relied on virtual services or travelled long distances to access specialized legal support.

The Family Law Centre helps clients navigate a range of legal issues related to family violence, including protection orders, child support disputes, parenting arrangements, and cases where parenting time is being denied. Clients receive support from both a lawyer and an advocate who work with them throughout the legal process. Staff can also connect clients with other supports, including counselling, victim services, parenting programs, settlement services, and Indigenous cultural supports.

The province says that the expansion is part of a broader effort to improve access to justice in northern B.C. and ensure survivors have access to the same services available in larger urban centres. Along with the new Prince George location, a Family Law Centre will also open in Kamloops.

Eligibility rules have also been expanded, allowing more people experiencing family violence to qualify for assistance. The program will continue to prioritize survivors who have recently left an abusive partner and are facing urgent legal matters involving their safety or their children.

Funded through a $29-million provincial investment announced in 2024, the Family Law Centre program has helped more than 350 clients across B.C. since its launch. While the new Prince George office is being established, virtual services will remain available for people throughout the region, including Vanderhoof and Mackenzie.

Provincial officials say the expansion will provide more equitable access to legal support for survivors in northern communities and help families find stability, safety and support closer to home.
