Highway Patrol ramps up enforcement on Highway 24 amid wildfire detours

BC Highway Patrol is increasing enforcement along Highway 24 as wildfire-related closures of Highway 97 continue to divert large volumes of traffic through the Cariboo region.
Police say the rural highway is experiencing significantly more vehicles than usual due to detours caused by active wildfires. Highway 24, which typically sees lower traffic volumes, was not designed to handle large numbers of vehicles travelling at high speeds.
“Highway 24 is typically a low-volume rural corridor, and it’s not designed for a lot of traffic going fast,” said Sergeant Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol. “We’re trying to prevent collisions here, so BC Highway Patrol officers are increasing our presence on Highway 24 alongside Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement officers.”
The enforcement effort will focus on several common causes of serious crashes, including excessive speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving and unsafe passing.
