“We purchased this property in 2018 for Northern Lights Estate Winery, to grow more fruit for our wines,” Bell said. “But we thought it was such a spectacular place, and we wanted to introduce farming to more of northern B.C. One of the ways we can do that is by bringing people to our farm.”

Bell said sunflowers were a natural choice. They are completely edible and turn to follow the sun as it moves across the sky.

“Sunflowers are a spectacular flower for a variety of reasons,” he said. “They’re 100 per cent edible, which is really kind of unique. And, of course, they follow the sun. They’re always dynamic and moving, and very beautiful.”

Growing the sunflowers takes months of effort. Bell explained that the farm uses seeds from the previous year and plants tens of thousands more every season.

“Growing sunflowers is a little bit different than growing fruits like our blackcurrants and our rhubarb and our blueberries,” he said. “It’s love and nurture. We start early in the year, adding 30 to 50,000 seeds every single season.”

He said the sunflowers come in many colors and grow to various heights.

This year, the farm has added hayrides, more photo spots, and more food options, including hot meals and floats. There is also a playground for children. The festival is open from Thursday to Sunday until September 6.

Bell said no two visits are ever the same.

“One of the coolest things about coming to the Sunflower Festival is you never know what you’re going to see,” he said. “We’ve had engagements here. We’ve had people who want to get married here. We bring live music, paint and paddle, and Lego by the picnic tables.”

He said the festival has become a popular gathering spot for people in the area.

“There’s always a reason to come, and always unique characters,” Bell said. “So you never know who you’re going to see.”
