$5.25 Million settlement reached in Econo Lodge fire class action

PRINCE GEORGE — A $5.25 million settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit arising from the deadly 2020 fire at the Econo Lodge in Prince George.
The lawsuit was launched following the July 8, 2020 blaze at the Victoria Street motel, which claimed the lives of three people and forced guests and others at the property to flee. Investigators later determined the fire had been deliberately set.
According to court documents, the settlement will compensate eligible class members, including registered guests staying at the Econo Lodge on the night of the fire, people present at the motel during the blaze, patrons at the adjacent Yolks All Day Family Restaurant at the time, and family members of those who died.
The settlement agreement also brings a lengthy legal process closer to an end. Class counsel sought approval of the settlement, a distribution plan for compensation, and legal fees through the B.C. Supreme Court.
