Banman leaves B.C. Conservatives, will sit as Independent MLA
ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford South MLA Bruce Banman has announced he is leaving the Conservative Party of B.C. caucus and will sit as an Independent in the provincial legislature.
In a statement released Thursday, Banman said his decision follows months of discussions with constituents and concerns about the direction of the party under its new leadership.
Banman was one of the first MLAs to join forces with former Conservative leader John Rustad as the party rebuilt ahead of the 2024 provincial election. He said the movement was founded on principles of fiscal responsibility and bringing “common sense” back to provincial politics.
Reflecting on the Conservatives’ strong showing in the last election, Banman said he had hoped the party would continue to grow and position itself as a credible alternative to the governing NDP. However, he said he has become increasingly concerned that the party’s current direction is narrowing its appeal to voters.
