Winnipeg Street to Reopen Following Sinkhole Woes

PRINCE GEORGE — Good news for Prince George motorists inconvenienced by the sinkhole at the corner of Winnipeg Street and Carney Street.

The City of Prince George expects all lanes of Winnipeg Street to be completely reopened by next week as repairs there are almost complete.

This week city crews are busy repaving road and painting traffic markings.

The city says pedestrian traffic on the east side of Winnipeg Street could be delayed for a few days longer as crews have to pour new concrete to form sidewalks.

There have been several sinkholes at that location over the past few years, beginning in July 2014.

City crews discovered eight metres of pipe had completely deteriorated following a large rainstorm this spring.

The city believes it was caused by turbulence from the discharge of storm water from the Carney Street storm sewer that enters the pipe at the location of the failed pipe.
