Relay for Life launched
PRINCE GEORGE – One of the city’s largest fundraising events was kicked off this morning.
Organizers for the annual Relay for Life gathered at Northland Dodge to kick off the 2019 event, which is Canada’s only 24-hour event. The event will be held at Exhibition Park this year, but the track layout will be slightly different. Two vehicles will be up for grabs this year: a Nissan Micra and a Hyundai Elantra. To qualify, each relayer will receive an entry form for every $500 raised. And there are changes for qualifying too.
“We are extending the qualification period this year. So participants can qualify right up until after the Luminary ceremony on Saturday,” explains Aimee Cassie, Annual Giving Coordinator. “Quite often we see participants and teams fundraise at the event itself, but we’ve already had the cutoff. So I think this year, you’ll see a lot more fundraising at the event for teams trying to get that ballot into the draw box.”
Progress in the fight against cancer is being made. In the 1940’s, the survival rate for Canadians with cancer was about 25 per cent. Today, more than 60 per cent of those diagnosed will survive at least five years after their diagnosis.
