Remember When: Celebrating Canadiana

PRINCE GEORGE–In case you missed our awesome show, here’s a little summary:

The Canadian Flag

Canada’s first official flag wasn’t everyone’s first choice. The red and white stripes with the maple leaf at the centre only became our official flag in the 1960’s. Until then Canada had been flying under the red, Ensign flag:

Lester B Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada can be held accountable for the push for a new flag.

Coming up with a new design had Canadians from coast to coast torn; with some wanting to keep the Ensign and others pushing for a new and improved design. Finally on the morning of December 15th 1964, the Canadian flag, as we know it became Canada’s official flag.

Sandblasting down the cutbanks

The famous Prince George cutbanks were the place for skiers to show off their skills on the sand covered hill during the summer, when finding snow in PG was scarce.

The event ran for more than 30 years, evolving from skiing to biking and even using furniture to ride down the hill. The end to sandblasting came in 2003 after a couch with bicycle wheels was sent down the hill, injuring its riders and two others in its descent.

The Caesar, Canada’s Cocktail

An interesting bunch of ingredients that when tossed together, people actually enjoy. Although there are conflicting stories about the true origins of the drink, the most popular one is the one of it starting in Calgary.

The drink is said to have been created at an Italian restaurant in the Western province in 1969, inspired by the bar tenders favourite meal, spaghetti and clams. It is estimated that 350 million Caesar’s are consumed every year.

There ya go, a little summary of our show. Happy, and safe Canada Day from all of us at CKPG News!
