Salmon stock stuggling

Fraser River rock slide could be “nail in the coffin” for this year’s salmon run

PRINCE GEORGE — A rock slide late last month found in a narrow part of the Fraser river near Clinton has been affecting salmon migration. It’s keeping millions of salmon from getting upstream for this season’s run and could have long lasting consequences.

“It could be the nail in the coffin,” said Dustin Snyder, Vice-President of the Spruce City Wildlife Association. He noted the stock for a number of salmon species and that a few being affected by the blocked stream are endangered or threatened.

Fisheries and Oceans officials have already said it’s the top priority for the department. Snyder hopes this can act as the catalyst for change and a commitment from the government to help with a continually lowering stock, but adds he is not that optimistic.
