Little Prince to Move

Little Prince to get a new home next year

PRINCE GEORGE – The City’s Finance and Audit Committee is recommending Council approve of a capital plan for the coming year and it includes a project that has been on the wish list for years.

The Little Prince has been housed for years in a tiny Quonset hut adjacent to Exploration Place for years. But the construction of that facility is not adequate to protect the only 24-gauge steam engine in North America from the elements.

While the City owns the Little Prince, Exploration Place maintains it and that has been increasingly challenged over the years. And Exploration Place has been dogging the City for years to get a new shelter for the steam engine. And, at the most recent F & A meeting, $547,000 was committed under the “Funded” classification of the capital budget.

Music to the ears of Exploration Place’s CEO, Tracy Calogheros, who has had a plan in place for building the new home for years.

“Well, the plan is to tear out the existing Quonset hut that the train’s been living in for the last 30 or 40 years and replace it with a structure that is purpose-built. So it will be a wider structure, It’ll have storage not just for the wood we need to operate the train, but also for the tools and equipment that the engineers need for working on the train itself.”

As well, the Little Prince will have a housemate. The structure will also become home to the REO Speedwagon fire truck that is currently housed in Fire Hall #3.
