VANDERHOOF – It’s a general contractor’s dream. A mobile trailer that contains every woodworking tool needed to build something a simple as a bird to as complex as a real house.

And it belongs to School District 91.

It travels from school to school in the district, teaching young minds the fine craft of carpentry. And it was borne out of necessity.

“Like all of us up here in the North, especially SD91 and no different that folks east or west of us or north, we’re so spread out and we’re very small,” says Darren Carpenter, Coordinator for District Career and Trades Programs at District 91. “So to have that resource dedicated to just one school is very difficult in this day and age.”

The trailer was made possible through some funding two years ago. The District then gave their Facilities Manager, a carpenter himself, carte blanche to design the trailer.

Initially, there was a lot of travel to demonstrate the inner workings of the rolling treasure. But not so much any more.

“Some of it is just bringing teachers in, showing them how the trailer is set up and getting them comfortable with the tools and then helping them develop projects that are easy for the kids to do,” explains Kevin Derksen, Facilities Manager.

However, the District is quick to point out that the trailer would not even be possible without the ongoing support of the various businesses in the district.
