PRINCE GEORGE — A pair of Conservative MPs are demanding the federal government do more to support Canadian truck drivers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP and Shadow Transport critic Todd Doherty and Kelowna-Lake Country Conservative MP and Interprovincial Trade critic Tracy Gray have released a joint statement saying that they’ve heard from their colleagues and truckers about the difficulties and challenges they face.

They note that truck drivers “play a significant role in maintaining our supply chains in normal times; from supplying our grocery stores, restaurants and pharmacies” and that now more than ever, ” it is imperative to keep our supply chains moving” across the country.

“Every measure must be taken to ensure that our national supply chain remains safe, secure and provides for seamless movement of goods.”

Doherty and Gray add that truck drivers are also on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic and deserve the full support of the federal government.

“While drive throughs remain open; they are not beneficial to long-haul truckers, who can’t access them. Adding insult to injury, the lack of washroom facility access has become a significant, unnecessary and unfair challenge to these front-line workers.”

They add that these concerns are not merely a “nice to have” but have a very real impact on the health and safety of our truck drivers.

Doherty and Gray go on to implore that federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau “ensure Canada’s transportation networks are safe and secure,” and ask for his prompt response.
