PRINCE GEORGE — It has been a labour of love for one local woman and a small army of volunteers and growers but her time with the project has run it’s course. Fortunately, the Good Food Box has not.

It is the brainchild of Jovanka Djordjevich.

“We started our first box in May of 2002.”

But Djordjevich has packed her own bags and uprooted and passed the torch to successor Jennier Harris, who has opted to keep the Good Food Box running.

The Good Food Box allows patrons to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at a low cost.

The program has grown since its humble beginnings 18 years ago as many have a heightened awareness of food security and a determination to know where their food comes from.

“I think they are. But what we say is this is just one part of a local food security program. So, supporting our local farmers is important,” says Djordjevich. “If you don’t have time to go to the Farmers’ Market, this is an excellent option. And as well you do save based on going to the Farmers’ Market as well because we’re buying in bulk so we’re saving you money.”

The hope is that, under Jennifer Harris’s capable hands, the program will grow even more over the next eighteen years and beyond.
