Prince George Cougars goaltender Tyler Brennan received a major honour Thursday morning as he was one of twelve WHL players to be named to Hockey Canada’s U18 team selection camp.

Brennan was one of six goaltenders set to compete for a spot on Team Canada at the 2020 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which was scheduled for August but was cancelled due to Covid-19.

“We’re thrilled to see Tyler get this type of recognition. It’s unfortunate the tournament is cancelled, but for him to be considered one of the top players in the country for his age group is a well-deserved honour,” stated Cougars Head Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb in a press release sent out by the team Thursday.

Brennan is coming off his rookie season with the Cats where he posted a 4-6-1 record with a 3.34 GAA and a .887 SV%.

“It was a difficult decision to cancel the tournament, as it provides the opportunity to showcase the top under-18 players in a best-on-best international showcase,” shared Senior Vice-President of National teams for Hockey Canada Scott Salmond in a press release.

“We want to recognize the 46 players and our three coaches for this tremendous accomplishment, and we look forward to watching all players continue to develop as they look ahead to next season and a chance to compete at the IIHF U18 World Championship.”

This wouldn’t have been Brennan’s first time dawning the red and white, as the Winnipeg product suited up for Team Canada White at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge last November.
