PRINCE GEORGE— A kayaker who was reported missing earlier today (Aug.5) is breathing a little easier this morning after being rescued.

Prince George RCMP say that they received a report of a missing kayaker at around 2 a.m. on the Willow River.

Police say that two adult males had set out to kayak a portion of the river on the afternoon of August 4. The planned route was nearly a 30 km stretch ending near where the river intersects with Hwy. 16. One of the kayakers failed to arrive at the location.

Mounties attended the scene and began to search for the missing man, Emergency Management BC was contacted and the Prince George Search and Rescue Society were called to help. The search for the missing kayaker continued overnight and a helicopter search began at first light.

At around 8:30 a.m. the man was located by personnel aboard the helicopter. The man didn’t appear to have any major injuries and was airlifted to meet paramedics where he was medically accessed.

Prince George RCMP say this incident serves as a reminder to the public that river systems in the area are very high and fast-moving. Police say that water activities in our area are discouraged.
