100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A pair of prescribed burns are on the horizon for the 100 Mile area.

First up, the BC Wildfire Service says crews will burn nearly three hectares of woody debris near Watch Lake south of 100 Mile House. It’s part of a project that covers a total of 39.4 hectares, adjacent to properties in the Green Lake and Watch Lake area.

The wildfire service says ignitions will begin as early as Thursday (Nov. 5), dependent on site and weather conditions, and continue through to March 31, 2027.

“Crews will ignite approximately 100 piles that are two metres by three metres in size. These piles were created from the selective thinning and pruning of immature trees,” the wildfire service states in a news release issued Tuesday (Nov. 3). “Smoke and flames may be visible to surrounding communities. Smoke from within the perimeter of the burn may be visible up to 72 hours after ignition.”

Further north, nearly 138 hectares of woody debris are set to be burned near Mirage Lake.

While mechanical raking and pile prep will begin as early as this week, the wildfire service says pile burns will begin as early as December and continue through March 31, 2027.

“Burn pile ignitions will only proceed if conditions are safe, with favourable weather and atmospheric venting allowing smoke to clear quickly,” the wildfire service states in a separate news release issued Tuesday.

Goals of the prescribed burns include reducing wildfire risk to the 100 Mile areas, strategically removing forest fuels and protecting wildlife habitat, recreational values and environmental features.
