2 more cases of COVID-19 in Northern Health, 47 in B.C.

VANCOUVER—Two new cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region were reported this afternoon (Aug.6).

The two additional cases in the north bring the total of test-positive cases in the Northern Health Authority to 93. Provincially, there are 47 new cases including one epi-linked one.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,143
  • Fraser Health: 2,045
  • Vancouver Island Health: 146
  • Interior Health: 385
  • Northern Health: 93
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 69

There is a total of 3,881 test-positive cases of the virus in B.C. of those, 371 are active. Of the active cases, 11 are in hospital and five of those are in ICU.

No new deaths were reported, Health Minister, Adrian Dix saying that this marks six days without any new deaths to COVID-19 in the province. There have been a total of 195 deaths in the province to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Dr. Henry says that she understands the concerns many parents across the province may have when it comes to having to send their kids back to school in the fall, however, says that it is essential for students.

“The cost of keeping our schools closed is too high,” she said, adding that going back is essential to children’s mental health and to their education.

“Opening means increasing interactions, we know that. But we also know that’s backstopped by doing it with layers of protection.”—Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. Provincial Health Officer

Henry adds that many layers of protection will be taken at schools in order to prevent any spread of the virus and that everyone needs to work together to make the return to shcool the safest it can be.

There are two new healthcare outbreaks in the province in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, leaving a total of five outbreaks in healthcare. Once again British Columbians are asked to keep an eye on community exposures across the province. A total of 3,315 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C.
