SURREY— The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C. is investigating an incident that took place earlier this summer in Burns Lake.

A media release by the RCMP Watchdog says that they received information from police on August 27 that indicated that earlier that day (at around 5 p.m.) they’d conducted a traffic stop near Richmond Loop on Hwy.16.

At the officer’s request the man exited the vehicle, where an altercation occurred between the two soon after. The man was arrested an then transported to the RCMP detachment.

Once they’d arrived the man noted he was injured and Emergency Health Services (EHS) were called. The man was then taken to hospital where he was confirmed to have sustained serious injuries.

The IIO asks that anyone who saw, heard or recorded the incident contact their witness line at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
