Low risk COVID-19 exposure at PGSS

PRINCE GEORGE — Northern Health has reported a possible COVID-19 exposure at Prince George Secondary Secondary School.

The health authority says the potential exposure occurred on Oct.2. Parents were notified on Friday, October 13.

“What we see is the protocols are working. I think our schools are as safe as our community,” stated SD57 Superintendent Anita Richardson. “If anything we learn from this is that we keep our schools safe by following the protocols that are outlined; so don’t come to school, don’t go to work, if you’re sick or experiencing symptoms, follow the hygiene protocols, and socially distance when you can, and if you can’t then wear a mask.”

Richardson, whose own kids go to PGSS, says parents all have a level of concern about the safety of their children. She admits hers were no higher on Tuesday than any other day when sending her children to class.

Northern Health says the notification and information is available on their website and it is very much intended to reassure school staff, parents or the school community that public health is also aware of cases they may be learning of and that follow up is underway.

Spokesperson Eryn Collins says an exposure means that either a staff member at the school or a student has tested positive and that they may have been in the school while they were potentially contagious but it doesn’t mean that they were in close contact with others which would be the main concern for transmission of the virus.

She says parents shouldn’t be concerned about their kids going to school unless Northern Health or school officials contact them.
