PRINCE GEORGE – The last time the City took a look at the housing stock available in the community was 2014.
But much has changed since then.
That’s why the City is applying to the Union of BC Municipalities to fund a new housing needs assessment.
“Do we need low-income housing? Do we need subsidized housing? Do we need more condos for sale, so market housing? Or do we need to increase the inventory of rental units in Prince George? This will Panswer those types of questions,” says Melissa Barcellos, Manager of Economic Development for the City.
Much has changed since 2014. The total number of residential permits has incrementally risen from 365 in 20104 to 512 in 2019. The vacancy rates have headed the other direction, dropping from 4.2% in 2016 to 2.8% in 2019.
And the plan is to consult with a number or agencies and organizations, should the funding be approved, which includes a community engagement process with residents, non-profit housing providers, educational institutions, realtors, homebuilders and developers.
